Happy New Year, Ontario! 🚨
As we welcome 2026, we’re sending warm wishes for a safe, healthy, and joyful year ahead.
🔥 NEW FIRE CODE REQUIREMENTS: Carbon monoxide alarms
The start of a new year is the perfect time to build strong safety habits, starting with a crucial update:
This year, Ontario's newly updated Fire Code requires carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on every storey of your home, not just near sleeping areas.
Ensure you have working CO alarms on every level of your home immediately.
Don't forget to test all your smoke and CO alarms today and review your home escape plan with everyone in your household.
Fire safety is more than a checklist—it’s a mindset that protects lives, property, and entire communities. Let’s carry that commitment into 2026 and continue working together to keep Ontario safe.

🚨FIRE PREVENTION FRIDAY🚨
Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional, and remember to...
➡️ Not use the dryer without a lint filter.
➡️Clean out the dryer’s lint filter before each use of the dryer. Remove the lint that has collected around the drum.
➡️Clean lint out of the vent pipe quarterly or have a dryer lint removal service do it for you. If you notice that it is taking longer than usual for your clothes to dry, it should be cleaned more often.
➡️ Install rigid or flexible metal venting material to sustain proper air flow and drying time to reduce the risk of fire or fire spread.
➡️Turn off the dryer when you leave home or go to bed.

We would like to remind everyone to never discard cigarette or other smoking articles into plastic pots. Always use a metal tin that is kept away from your house.
NEVER put old lithium-ion batteries (from phones, tools, e-scooters) in the trash or regular recycling. Crushed batteries ignite, risking workers & property.
Take rechargeable batteries to a designated drop-off.

New gadget drops/dents? Damaged li-ion batteries are volatile!
STOP using/charging if you see:
• SWELLING/BULGING
• EXCESSIVE HEAT
• ODD SOUNDS/SMELLS
Move device to a safe, non-flammable spot (metal/concrete) outside & call the non-emergency fire line.

⚡️Toasters, coffeemakers, and microwaves should go directly into the outlet—no shortcuts! 🔌
If you need an extension cord, ensure it’s the right gauge and look for the certification mark CSA/ULC approved. For electronics and lights, stick to approved power bars.

As we “spring forward”, don’t forget: changing your smoke and CO alarm batteries is a crucial step in protecting your home and loved ones - if your alarm uses long-life 🔋, you won’t need to replace them, but it’s still important to test them to ensure they’re working properly!
Every month I get this email in my inbox from @onfiremarshal and our team in Public Education and Communications. A gentle reminder to test my smoke alarms each month.
