Now, here is why I have repeatedly said NO to all the numerous requests about Outlier even from people closely related to me. It is not because I am wicked or because I do not want anyone to earn money, especially considering the economic hardship in Nigeria.
First, all the details used on the platform would be mine. If there is ever any compromise, violation, or issue with the account, I would be the one held responsible.
Second, I am still a student and am only permitted to work 24 hours per week. Any earnings from Outlier would be paid into my account and declared as additional income. That income would be subject to taxation and could also raise questions about whether I have complied with the work restrictions attached to my student status. As you know, ignorance of the law is never an excuse.
You may not fully understand this decision until you are in a position where you have genuine privileges, opportunities, benefits, and even security clearances on the line. When you have something significant to lose, the risks and consequences are viewed very differently.
Dear Blessing,
I just came across your tweet, and it truly inspired me.
To graduate with a First Class in Mathematics from UNILORIN and then earn a fully funded Master's admission in Italy is an extraordinary achievement. You have demonstrated excellence and the promise that exists in so many young Nigerians.
No young person who has worked this hard should have such an opportunity limited by the cost of getting there. It would be my privilege to support your journey by covering what is left in the cost of your relocation.
@nancy_i_i from my office will reach out to you today.
Congratulations once again. Go, excel, and continue to make Nigeria proud.
Bear in mind that Michael Jackson passed away long before this kid was even born, yet he’s still influenced by him. MJ’s impact is simply unreal. Even in death, he remains the undisputed GOAT.
Something happened years ago that completely changed my perspective on people living abroad, even before I relocated.
I had a friend whose brother lived overseas and was solely responsible for the family’s welfare back home. Every bill and every responsibility rested on his shoulders. Then life happened. He ran into serious financial difficulties and was on the verge of being evicted from his apartment.
Instead of understanding what he was going through, some of his own siblings started calling him stingy and accusing him of abandoning the family.
Now that I live abroad, I understand his situation even better.
Life abroad can be incredibly tough. Most of what you become here is built entirely by your own effort. There is no constant safety net, no relatives around to bail you out, and borrowing money or expecting handouts is nowhere near as common as many people back home imagine.
So, if you have family or friends living abroad, try to reduce your expectations. Sometimes, they are not refusing to help because they don’t care. They simply may not be in a position to do so. A person can be smiling on a video call while quietly struggling to keep a roof over their head.
You can't get STD from using a public toilet, that's why it's called STD. Stop blaming the toilet. Go treat yourself and also tell your partner(s) to do same.
Your citizenship really determines so much for you. As a Nigerian, your matter long ooo.
I had a Saudi classmate when I was fling my Masters. He explained to me that all Saudis in the UK were fully sponsored by the government. I asked what his plan was after school, he said he was going back home to take up a job. He didn't even like the UK. I don't blame him, he struggled with the language and culture.
I had Korean classmates (those ones are always rich and clean). No one was staying back or had plan to.
I saw Chinese classmate 2 years later. He had started a business with his babe. He told me the government encourages them to take loan to invest abroad. I thought we were just having a discussion. I didn't know he had his plan mapped out.
My Spanish friend (the only one I still talk to), I asked him when he was going to pick up his British passport since he was eligible for it having been in UK for many years, he said he didnt need it that his passport takes him where he needs to go. I spoke to him recently and he said he is looking to leave the UK soon. He wants to return home to Barcelona. That reminds me, he has been inviting me to Barcelona 🤦♂️
At the start of Covid, my Canadain flatmate packed his bag and left. He told me he would finish his program from there. I once asked how he was paying for his program (Law Undergraduate), he said he took a loan from the bank in Canada.
Then you look at Nigerians- we are always looking for how to stay back at all cost because home offers nothing. Conversation always centred around sponsorship jobs - even if it is care job. This is after working 12 hours shift through out your Masters to pay for your fees and cover for your living expenses. People are even so desperate, they are paying 10k to 12k for sponsorship job just to stay back.
It’s always interesting seeing our Nigerian sisters dating oyibo.
A few days ago, I got talking to a guy who’s engaged to a Nigerian lady. They were already making wedding plans. As we chatted, the way he spoke about her, with so much admiration and respect, was refreshing. Looking at her too, I could tell she was a smart lady. I was genuinely happy for them.
Then I jokingly turned to our Nigerian sister and asked, “Since you people started dating, how many wigs have you requested?”
She laughed and said, “We don’t do that over here.”
I nearly fell off my chair.
I replied, “But if na Nigerian man, by now your eyes for don open like periwinkle. Every other week na, ‘Baby, my wig is old,’ ‘Baby, I need human hair,’ ‘Baby, just one small package.
Imagine what a nation battling a high HIV burden is doing. Instead of focusing on solving the problems affecting its own people, it is busy targeting and harassing foreigners.
This is the so called mega city Tinubu built. The coastal road is being presented as a landmark project, but to me it looks more like a conduit for siphoning public funds. It is a colossal waste of resources when millions of Nigerians are struggling with basic needs.
Ladies and gentlemen, behold the mega city that Tinubu discovered and built.
Shebi una want coastal road, una eye go cee shege. Make crocodile no chop person.
