Manager speaking up, but generally my advice is to do what you feel is comfortable and remember your own value. IRL, definitely one should be compensated for their travel, their lodgings, and any costs associated with attending the convention, completing panels, meeting fans, etc.

For virtual, it still takes your time to do it, so it's definitely fair to negotiate an appearance fee, especially if you find yourself in significant demand. But a lot of us don't mind taking an hour out of our day to meet with some fans, provided the team we're working with is respectful of that time!
