We know you're concerned about your fishing rights, identity, and sovereignty. Reopening negotiations would not mean giving these up. It would simply allow Iceland to see what deal the EU would give, maybe it would be surprisingly good for you!

There is a lot Iceland could gain from membership. Europe is already Iceland's biggest trading partner, with the EU making up over half of Iceland's goods trade and around two thirds of its exports. Joining could make it easier for Icelandic businesses to trade, invest and grow across the European market, while giving Iceland a direct say in the decisions that affect that market.

There is also the possibility of greater monetary stability. Iceland's key interest rate is currently 8.0%, while the ECB's deposit rate is 2.25%. Membership would not instantly lower Icelandic interest rates, but adopting the euro in the future could mean a more stable currency, less exchange rate risk and potentially lower borrowing costs. This could make it easier for young people to buy homes, start businesses and plan their futures!

Young Icelanders could gain more opportunities to study, work and build careers across Europe. Iceland already benefits from programmes such as Erasmus+, but EU membership could give young Icelanders even greater access to European opportunities and a stronger voice in shaping them.

Iceland also has huge potential in renewable energy, geothermal technology, tourism, technology, research and sustainable industries. Closer European integration could bring more investment, partnerships, customers and opportunities for Icelandic companies, which could more easily scale across the large, European market.

And not just that, common European projects such as satellite internet via IRIS², Galileo (navigation satelites) and future space exploration and development such as to the Moon & Mars would not be a possible endeavour for Iceland alone, but within Europe, Iceland can participate in megaprojects that define the future.

Membership would also strengthen Iceland's security through the EU's mutual defence clause, under which EU countries have an obligation to assist a member that suffers armed aggression. European cooperation also provides opportunities to work together on cybersecurity, Arctic security, maritime security and protecting critical infrastructure.

The world is changing quickly. With uncertainty growing around the world and America's future role becoming less predictable, having strong and reliable partners is more important than ever. Europe offers Iceland the chance to stand alongside other democratic countries and face these challenges together. A stronger Europe can help protect its members from outside pressure while allowing each country to keep the culture, language and traditions that make it unique.

Being part of Europe does not have to mean becoming less Icelandic. It can mean having more people standing behind Iceland while Iceland continues to be Iceland. European cooperation could help protect Icelandic culture, language and traditions from outside pressure, while giving Iceland a stronger voice and greater confidence in an increasingly uncertain world.

The world will continue to change whether Iceland chooses to act or not. Ignoring those changes will not make them disappear. By working more closely with its European neighbours, Iceland can help shape that changing world instead of simply adapting to decisions made elsewhere. It is an opportunity to look forward with confidence while protecting what makes Iceland special.

Iceland would gain a voice in Europe, greater opportunities for its young people, closer economic cooperation and the possibility of greater monetary and security stability.

Reopening negotiations costs nothing compared with the opportunity it could create. Iceland can negotiate, protect its interests and then decide.

Why say no before finding out what Europe can offer?
