This is the reality of most houses and estates in Abuja.

The most common snakes around Abuja are cobras and pythons.

And no, they are not restricted to bushes, slums, lungus or satellite towns, they are right there with you in your fine gated and tarred estate..

I'm an Estate Surveyor, I manage estates in Abuja, so I have first hand information about what I'm writing here. Almost every estate, both within the city and its outskirts, has snake activity around it. Some you see. Many you don’t.

That’s why fumigating your home and surroundings regularly is not luxury. It is basic safety.

I'll also advise you to be careful when renting a house where your neighbour or landlord is using a corner of the compound to do poultry.

You may live in a fine, clean, gated estate and assume you’re immune. I once lived in such a calm estate, serene & organized, Yet snakes were killed there almost daily.

At night, you could hear strange movements beneath the drainage lines.The very week I moved out, a massive python was discovered and killed. When I saw the picture, I honestly thought it was an anaconda. Not a joke. Not exaggeration.

Here’s a quiet warning sign many people ignore:

If you hardly see rats or lizards around your environment, especially when there are no cats, it might not be cleanliness.

It could be predators already living quietly among you. Snakes don’t need bushes to survive. They only need dark spaces, warmth, hiding spots, and food.

Always check your environment: seal holes around building edges, cover ceiling manholes properly, clear scrap metals, abandoned tyres, wood piles, close drainage openings, eliminate hiding corners.

There are also plants like snake repellent herbs, such as lemongrass and snake plants that help discourage reptiles from nesting around your homes.

Finally, It is heartbreaking to hear of the young, promising lady whose life was lost to a snake bite, something that is preventable.

This is not about panic. It’s about awareness.
It’s about protecting your household.

Don’t wait for tragedy to teach you caution.
Stay alert. Stay prepared. Stay alive.
