@RutgersAltRoute A5: I like to compare students' performance on formative and summative assessments to be able to give them concrete proof of their improvement. Seeing tangible growth really improves a student's motivation and mindset. #altrted#growthmindset
@RutgersAltRoute A4: I always make sure I give feedback on what the student did well before I give feedback on what they can improve on. Yes, there's always room to improve, but there's also ways that the student did improve, and it's important that they know this. #altrted#growthmindset
@RutgersAltRoute A3: It is not only acceptable to make mistakes in my class, it's encouraged. A student who never makes a mistake never improves, especially in art and music, where creativity is sometimes more important that following a set of rules. #altrted#growthmindset
@RutgersAltRoute A2: Public musical performance can be very stressful, especially for young students, so I make sure that I keep my feedback positive and constructive so that students aren't discouraged and are motivated to improve. #altrted#growthmindset
@RutgersAltRoute A1: When I show my students a musical performance, I often have students who claim it must be altered in some way, because they cannot fathom themselves being that successful. This destroys students' motivation to improve so I try to put a stop to it asap #altrted#growthmindset
@RutgersAltRoute A5: The best way is to consider behavior and discipline on a case-by-case basis. Students all have different behavior management skill and need to be treated as such #AltRtEd#sped
@RutgersAltRoute A4: I make sure my lessons are engaging relevant to a student's interests. Aside from that I also provide fidgets or breaks for students as needed. #AltRtEd#sped
@RutgersAltRoute A3: students with learning disabilities can lose motivation when they find a task discouraging, because of this I always try to make my lessons engaging and understandable. #AltRtEd#sped
@RutgersAltRoute A2: I encourage students to speak up for themselves. For students having trouble with this, I'll prompt them to speak up, in the hopes they will develop that skill. #AltRtEd#sped
@RutgersAltRoute While modifying/scaffolding, finding the most fundamentally important info for the lesson helps with my understanding and how I deliver that info to all my students
@RutgersAltRoute A5: One important thing I remind students who are being harassed or bullied is that it isn't their fault. Bullying has very little to do with the victim and everything to do with the bully him/herself
@RutgersAltRoute A4: The biggest challenge HIB poses is that it's discouraging. School is a place where students need to feel safe and supported to make mistakes and work hard to improve, and HIB can totally undermine that feeling of safety and support
@RutgersAltRoute A3: In my district, we use GoGuardian to ensure that students are not engaging in any harmful activities online. In the event that a student is harassing or being harassed, I will know immediately and I can discuss this with the student's parent, guidance counselor, etc.
@RutgersAltRoute A2: one of my biggest HIB issues in my classes is students "roasting" each other. I explain to my students that roasting is friends lightheartedly poking fun at one another, and continually demeaning another student is not funny or clever, it's just being mean
@RutgersAltRoute A1: I teach K-5 and I find a lot of times when a student is harassing another student, they don't really understand how hurtful they're being, so I'll speak with both students independently so they can have a better understanding of what they're doing and how to change it
