Leaders: 6 Ways to Lower Staff Stress This Year
1) Explain 1-on-1 Meetings β If you call an individual meeting, let them know the reason up front.
2) Donβt Punish the Whole Team β Address issues directly, not with blanket announcements.
3) Praise 5x More Than You Critique β Recognition should outweigh correction every time.
4) Protect Their Time β Fewer meetings, more meaningful work.
5) Support Is a Key, Not an Extra β Encouragement is essential, not optional.
6) Pause Evaluations During Peak Stress β Avoid adding pressure during testing, grading, or end-of-semester crunch.
Remember, micromanagement, at its core, is trying to control others to be and do things exactly as you would. This stifles their unique talents, strengths, and passionsβqualities that make them great.
The relationships between school leaders and staff, as well as among staff members, are just as important as those between teachers and students. Strong adult relationships lead to better collaboration, support, and morale, directly enhancing the quality of education.
Students know when a teacher is real. They have a radar for authenticity.
* Admit when you've made a mistake
* Say Thank You
* Don't feel like you have to know it all
* Listen to them/ ask them about their interests
* Use humor/ stories
* Let them know/ see you really care
@DriveBC why are there no updates about #BCHwy1#Shuswap between #ChaseBC and #SorrentoBC? Single alternating traffic with about 1 hour wait. Mouth of the Little Shuswap/River to Little Boat World in an hour. People need to know.
Providing teachers lunch, coffee, jeans day, or covering their lunch/bus duty doesn't magically fix all the issues in a school, but in my experience, it sure beats not doing them! Show a little appreciation as Standardized Tests approach.
Bullying shouldnβt be part of leadership. Thankfully most arenβt like this. But here are some of the signs of
bullying:
* lack transparency
* use title/ position as power
* tell instead of ask
* demeaning/disrespectful
* lack empathy
* refuse feedback/ input
* favors yes people
When we discuss student engagement, we never discuss the importance of teacher engagement. Gallup research says employees ( including teachers) are 6 times more engaged when they feel valued and that their strengths are utilized. This creates a dynamic learning environment!
