Our new research by @KiraboSuubi,Chima Izugbara and Maureen Kangere
highlights a crucial but often overlooked factor in preventing and responding to child sexual abuse (CSA): children’s own knowledge and agency.

This brief draws on findings from quasi-experimental studies conducted in Western Uganda and Zanzibar, Tanzania by the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) and its partners.

Empowering children with accurate information and the confidence to act plays a pivotal role in safeguarding their rights and well-being. The evidence is clear children aren’t just passive recipients of protection; they can be active participants in it.

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate progress but also recognize the urgent challenges that remain. Women continue to bear the brunt of war, climate change, and economic instability. From conflict zones to communities devastated by environmental disasters, women are on the frontlines leading, rebuilding, and demanding change.

Yet, they remain underrepresented in decision-making spaces, their voices too often ignored.

This day is a call to action. We must go beyond celebration and commit to real change ensuring equal rights, access, and opportunities for ALL women. Because when women thrive, societies prosper.
