Good to see a widespread failure of governance and police coupled with an occupation of the capital and an attempt to overthrow the government does indeed constitute an emergency.
]"Let’s imagine, just for a moment, a world without Ukrainian courage, or American and European weapons, or the unity and support of democracies around the world," @anneapplebaum writes.

I am disgusted the EA had to be used. But things were so wretched, the occupiers so dangerous and intransigent, and there was no choice. The failure is Ottawa's, the Ottawa police's, and Ford's. If they'd done their goddamned jobs, the EA wouldn't have been needed.
I have been hearing the idea from some Republicans that Ukrainian resistance comes at a cost to Americans. Nothing could be more wrong. Ukrainian resistance provides extraordinary security benefits to Americans. 1/
In a wide-ranging conversation at his compound in Kyiv, Volodymyr Zelensky tells The Atlantic what Ukraine needs to survive—and describes the difference between winning and liberation. https://t.co/hvSms96CgN
.@peterpomeranzev: "For the same reason that Ukraine is the crucible of so much horror in history—it has also produced the ideas, stories, and policies that define good from bad for us all. It will again. It must again" https://t.co/WNzVSbd5Ek
Jan 28-Feb 14: Ottawa paralyzed. Police do nothing.
Feb 14: Federal emergency declaration.
Feb 18-20: Police move in. Blockades cleared.
Feb 23: Emergency declaration lifted.
In sum: Emergency declaration restores order, is lifted soon after.
Outrage!
1. Thread on populism and the trucker convoy incoming!
My conversations over the last two weeks have gone something like this:
“Amar, what's this thing?
“A populist movement”
“But what do they believe?”
“It’s a populist movement”
“What do they want?”
“It’s a populist movement"
I think it bears constantly repeating: Vaccine mandates and passports are not a restriction on the freedom of the 90% of the population that is vaccinated.
The 10% that is unvaccinated are free to remain so, albeit with consequences.
What I learnt on the Twitter this week:
1. Ottawa Police Chief says there may not be a policing solution to policing people. Hires PR firm to stop himself from saying stuff like that anymore.
2. CPC caucus decides party members should not be free to decide who should be leader.
Very good point made by someone in my Twitter feed. On Wednesday, Chief Sloly referred to tagging and towing as not being an "elegant solution." I heard it and made a mental note of it but didn't think about it. 1/
