โฆ after 55 years of living in the Northern Hemisphere, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa admits she still finds it strange to be celebrating in the middle of summer (in New Zealand).
โI just canโt get used to it!โ she says. โIt never clicks because itโs just not cold enoughโ
โHeโs such a lovely little boy โ we have a lot of fun together,โ enthuses Dame Kiri Te Kanawa about her grandson Luther. Kiri moved back to Aotearoa in 2021 to be near him.
Life is goodโฆ What brings me the most joy is knowing people are happy. I just like to make sure that my husband, my grandchild, my son and my daughter are all living their lives with contentment. Thatโs really all that matters.โ

Aotearoa New Zealandโs leading singing competition, the Song Quest, will from 2026 be known as the Kiri Te Kanawa Song Quest. Over its nearly 70-year history, the competition has established itself as the launchpad for the countryโs brightest operatic stars.
