A big update to my paper on investment incentives in approximation mechanisms! (with @akbarpour_, @skominers, Kevin Li, and Paul Milgrom.) We ask: What happens to a truthful mechanism's performance when bidders can invest to change their values? π§΅
What excites me about this paper is that it brings a new perspective to the treatment of algorithms in CS textbooks. 'Good' algorithms can cease to be good when embedded in a rich economic setting. And 'robustly good' performance requires new constraints on algorithm design.
Our old working paper assumed full information, i.e. bidders make investments knowing for sure what prices they will face.
This assumption is too strong: If there's no uncertainty about values/prices, why run a mechanism at all? π€
