soft hours ahead.

over the past month, brent has had multiple “i made it” moments, and every time i see one, i get quite sentimental. (wonʼt talk about mikaʼs for now since we have yet to see her solo ganaps, so i wonʼt speak until then.)

we all know that, at some point, brent was the most disliked housemate inside and outside the house. inside, he got a record-high thirteen nomination points for his tendency to isolate. majority of the housemates had a hard time trying to connect with him, hence the least desirable duo later on. simultaneously, outside, he got dragged left and right because some people felt he didnʼt deserve the spot, claiming that he was boring and lacking. they couldnʼt understand his quiet personality. we were there when he was called names—“display lang,” “wallflower,” “walang ambag,” and “walang personality.” and as fans, we defended him and fought for him until the very last moment. iʼm a generally positive person but also a realistic one. the odds were simply not in his favor. i remember i was so sure brince was going out that night and then was so freaking surprised and happy to have been wrong. clutch king came and said “not tonight.”

we thought saving brince would lessen the noise, but no, the hate train just became more heightened. many people were too hurt by their biasʼ eviction—and understandably so—but that pain was turned into hate, directed to brince, the duo that got saved. again, we defended the two, especially brent, against all the misconceptions, false narratives, and forced hate, because we know his heart.

eventually, the extended time given to brent as a housemate allowed him to show more of his true self, his character, and his heart. gradually, more and more people understood and saw what we had always known and seen from the start, and found themselves loving brent too. some people said he only became a big winner because of the duo system—because of the help of mikaʼs influencer friends. yes, part of it was true, but not solely because of it. people seemed to have forgotten that brent got the highest number of votes among all the kapamilya housemates during the fifth eviction night. apparently, he had quiet but solid supporters, who campaigned and voted for him. i hope those people and their part in making breka the big winner are not discredited. they might not have been as loud, but they certainly made their presence felt, as evidenced by the times brent needed votes to be saved and to be the seasonʼs big winner. indeed, thereʼs power in silence.

the thing is, people will always have something to say, and as a public figure, brent will always be scrutinized, and not everyone will be pleased by his actions, but the only difference is now the love is so much more abundant that the hate becomes almost negligible.

seeing brentʼs solo billboard today took me back to the iconic ikea couch moment that mikbrent had, talking about their dreams and plans after pbb. mika said one of her dreams was to have a billboard, and brent shared he had one at that moment, referring to a penshoppe advertisement with fellow ambassadors. if you saw the billboard, he was just one of the three and was just a “supporting character.” but now, just three months later, he has his solo billboard, where he is the main character. i just love it so much when i see someone making their dreams come true, even more so when they worked hard to achieve those dreams. they inspire me.

personally, i love brentʼs “more moves, less announcement” mentality. itʼs very much aligned with vinceʼs description of him, “kalmado pero planado.” the anticipation and excitement are still there, but there are less expectations, and as a result, less disappointment, just in case some things donʼt materialize. iʼm looking forward to whatʼs next for brent. he deserves every bit of success thatʼs coming his way. this is just the beginning.
