Deng was born on 22 August 1904 in Paifang village, Sichuan province. His father sent him to France in 1920 to further his studies, and it was in France that he developed an interest in communism. Consequently, he joined the Chinese Youth League in 1921 before proceeding to join the Chinese Communist Party in 1924 under the tutelage of his ally Zhou Enlai.

In 1926, he went to the USSR, where he received political and military training. Based on this background, he was appointed chief secretary of the Central Committee of the CCP and was tasked with commanding the 7th Red Army in the battle between the GMD and the CCP. He was defeated severally by GMD forces and left his position in 1931. In 1934, he was reinstated in CCP and was forced to take the Long March following a series of defeats from the GMD soldiers. His involvement in the Long March, together with the forces of the Red Army, cemented his relationship with Mao Zedong. Following the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, GMD & CCP forged a treaty to constitute a formidable force to fight the Japanese. Deng Xiaoping was appointed the political commissar under Commander Liu. After the end of WW2, the Chinese Civil War resumed, and by the end of the war, the PRC was founded with Mao Zedong as the leader. Liu and Deng Xiaoping were appointed to Chairman and vice chairman positions in the southwestern regions of China.

The year 1952 saw Deng get transferred to Beijing, where he rose through the ranks to become the most powerful individual after Mao, Liu, and Zhou Enlai. Deng was involved in the Hundred Flowers campaign, GLF, and was purged during the Cultural Revolution of 1966. After the purge, Deng was sent to Jiangxi province to work in a tractor factory, but Zhou Enlai(a great friend of Deng Xiaoping) convinced Mao Zedong to reinstate him. Deng once again climbed the leadership ladder and became the 3rd most powerful individual in the PRC. In 1976, Mao tacitly noted that Deng wanted to undermine his legacy of fighting the capitalists within the party, and this was the last purge to be carried out on him in the CCP. Hua Guofeng replaced him.
