The Net-Zero Banking Alliance has suspended activities after a wave of departures from banks like JPMorgan, Citi & UBS. Banks are cutting ties as financiers distance themselves from the global warming agenda after Donald Trump signed an executive order to terminate the Green New Deal. Membership has dropped from 140 banks in 2023 to under 100 by mid-2025, suggesting a shift as financial institutions prioritise profitability amid rising energy costs & geopolitical tensions, challenging the alliance’s original climate goals.
The Net-Zero Banking Alliance is a UN-sponsored initiative set up in 2021 by former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney, now Canadian prime minister. Carney has now repealed parts of Canada's federal carbon tax, reflecting a global trend where rising energy costs & geopolitical tensions challenge net-zero goals.
It's aim was to persuade financial institutions to limit their environmental footprint to align with net-zero by 2050. Members were required to set five-year goals to reduce financial support for high-carbon sectors.
