India ramps up gold reserve build-up

India’s gold reserves are rising fast – India is now the third-largest gold buyer in 2024, after Poland and Turkey.

As of June 2025, India holds 831.5 tonnes of gold, worth $71 billion, making up 13.5% of its forex reserves.

Reason for buying more gold – global trade uncertainty, US tariffs, geopolitical tensions, and the need to reduce dependence on the US dollar.

India purchased 77 tonnes in 2024, the highest since 2009, and continues to buy in 2025.

Compared to other nations, India’s gold buying pace is much faster than most Asian and developing countries.
