      Over the past months and years I have decided that the Republicans and my Congressman, Rob Wittman, have lost touch with the needs and the wishes of the American people, and instead have fallen under the spell of Donald Trump’s ego-driven calamity of policies on both the domestic and foreign fronts. I therefore determined to vote for a Democratic candidate for my First Congressional District.

      The most obvious choice was Shannon Taylor, who has the backing of the Democratic establishment, but she has been unimpressive, and I am a bit disturbed that the national and state parties have weighed in for her, to include funding, in a Democratic Primary meant to allow the voters to choose their desired candidate. It seems improper.

      Facing these qualms, I attended a candidates’ forum at Freeman High School which included all the Democratic candidates. I came away with two undeniable conclusions. First, Ms. Taylor was extremely weak on the substance of her answers to the excellent questions posed. Second, of the remaining six candidates on the stage, one stood out like a Denali against the backdrop of the other Alaskan mountains: Jason Knapp.

      To test this impression, my wife and I invited Mr. Knapp to a meet-and-greet at our home with a group of our neighbors. The results were rather extraordinary. Mr. Knapp captivated his audience. For over two hours he answered all questions posed to him with intelligence, practicality, and substance. The session was so intense that it extended beyond its anticipated end time because my neighbors were so intent upon posing their questions and listening to Mr. Knapp’s fulsome answers.

      So now I have the answer I have been seeking. It is abundantly clear to me that Jason Knapp is the Democrat’s strongest candidate, and indeed its best hope, for unseating Representative Wittman. Indeed, as a personal aside, Jason is one of the strongest candidates I have come across in some time. I urge my fellow Virginia District One residents to vote for Jason Knapp in the Democratic Primary on August 4th.

Comments close tonight on Google's Project Skye.

The Army Corps is taking public comment on an 887-acre data center campus in Chesterfield. The permit would permanently fill about 18 acres of forested wetland and a mile and a half of stream. Docket NAO-2026-00282. Today is the last day, so don't sit on it.

This is the only step in the whole approval where somebody is legally required to take what you write, put it in a permanent public record, and answer it. The rezoning happened four years ago. The land sold last summer. Six hundred people showed up to Google's open houses and asked questions, and not one word of it went into any official record.

Four things worth raising:

The impacts table isn't public. Ten sheets of drawings, nine published. All nine point to a table on the tenth. Nobody outside the applicant can check a single number.

The state paused its own review on July 23 because the application wasn't complete. Our deadline is five days later.

Almost all the stream being filled is a headwater channel. The wide corridors at the edges get left alone. What gets filled are the small draws at the top of the system, the ones doing the flood storage.

The rest of the buildout isn't counted. A road corridor, transmission work, and another campus are on Google's own exhibits and left out of this permit's math.

You can also ask for a public hearing. Any person can, in writing, during the comment period. The Corps has to grant it unless it decides the issues raised are insubstantial.

Regulations, transparency, and accountability. The engineering that goes into data centers and AI is incredibly complicated, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see through the deception going on across the country and the detriment it is and will have for our and future generations.
