Only warriors who haven't seen enough war yearn for more. Those who haven’t fully made it home from many battles are more likely to champion that life for their sons and daughters, sometimes to complete their own unfinished story, sometimes because the civilian world still feels flat by comparison. Those who have more fully returned tend to support it only after weighing the real costs of the going and the coming back from such a journey.

Dwight Eisenhower, who had commanded the largest amphibious invasion in history, said he hated war “as only a soldier who has lived it can.” Kurt Vonnegut, who survived the firebombing of Dresden, observed that the veterans who hated war most were usually the ones who had actually fought. A free and equal country doesn't have second-class citizens, in my opinion.
