These bus drivers are your fathers and uncles.
Reckless.
Illiterate.
Ungovernable.
Stupid.
You want to absolve a driver who knowingly disobeyed a traffic officer’s instructions. Put other road users at risk for 30 seconds he couldn’t wait?
Let’s stop setting low standards for bus drivers please. Remember, besides colliding with trains, their recklessness manifests in many other ways. Trains are less than 1% of their points of conflict.
He could have obeyed the “train crossing sign”, it alone is enough.
..they are all over yapping about railway crossing barriers while creating two lanes on the Naalya - Namugongo stretch
No signage or barrier can cure the stupidity that most Ugandan drivers come with to the roads
I’ve previously argued that Ugandan drivers haven’t earned hump-free roads. The railway crossing barrier debate only reinforces it.
A driver who won’t obey a railway crossing sign won’t obey a zebra crossing or a school-ahead sign either.
I am sick and tired of people who find every excuse to defend bad driving each time an accident happens. Go to any Level crossing and you will see how drivers are stopped and they still make attempts to beat the train. This reckless driving I have seen with my own eyes. I have seen people in a traffic hold up stop across the train rails and I often wonder if they know the train times! What if the train comes and the traffic has not moved?
The level of reckless driving is this nation is atrocious this is why I can’t do public transport any more!
@RailwaysUganda you're not at fault. Your trains clearly hoot & warn all incoming traffic. That driver was a fool. Same goes for the boda bodas and all motorists who are impatient. While the automated barriers are welcome, I promise you they'll be run through by reckless drivers
Greetings Comrades. Today’s events were deeply unfortunate. We extend our sincere concern to all those affected.
Uganda Railways Corporation is actively implementing interventions to address the risks at high-risk level crossings, and procurement is already in the advanced stages.
THE INTERVENTIONS
Automated barrier systems will be installed at railway level crossings in Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono.
The barriers will include Boom Gates, Warning Lights, and Audible Alarms, and will close whenever a train approaches.
In the meantime, additional manpower will be deployed at all level crossings as an immediate safety measure.
Working with the Ministry of Works and Transport, humps will also be constructed on highway approaches to selected Level Crossings to reduce vehicle speed.
This is taught in SST.
1. Trains take precedent.
2. A traffic officer was seen trying to stop the bus but clearly didnt.
3. Ministry of works must have signage that show that a train is transiting.
4. The bus driver is just reckless and needs to be in jail
I know as citizens we have got to a point where we have little to hope for but don't be the passenger allowing your boda guy to run the red light.
That's one of the few areas where you can still exercise some control. Make your ancestors proud. Sibyo?
Sawa 👌🏾
Basic driving school theory for those who learnt through that route, & basic common sense for those who bought their permits, dictates that when approaching a junction, railway crossing or otherwise, a driver should slow down & proceed with caution. This driver was reckless.
Uganda needs serious traffic regulations and enforcement on track and bus drivers! Those people act like they own roads and are entitled to right of way!
Arrest the bus driver. If he wasn't vigilant enough to watch for the incoming train and also obey the traffic officer, then he is to blame. He put those students through hell.

For everyone that claims @MoWT_Uganda is to blame for that accident, you might be true to a certain extent but watch the video closely. That driver chose to ignore the traffic officer flagging him down & sped through the railway. His recklessness caused the accident.
You rush to the hospital gasping for drugs… only to discover the shelves are emptier than Museveni’s promises. You die.
Meanwhile, your MP just got handed 500 million to buy a sleek new car. What do we call this? “Public service” where the service is public money, and the public gets served a coffin instead. Terminal priorities, delivered with zero side effects for the MP. 🙃
Having watched this video. I wonder where he was rushing to. He got flagged down by the traffic officer and still chose to dare the train. No sort of barrier will be helpful if drivers choose to be this reckless.
Railway crossings are dangerous. We need barriers placed at least half a kilometre away so that road traffic has time to stop. That bus may have landed on the Boda Boda men who obeyed the order to stop. It may happen to cars & pedestrians too.
