Home Affairs Moves to Revoke 2,000 Fraudulent Study Visas in Major Immigration Crackdown
South Africa's Department of Home Affairs is preparing to cancel more than 2,000 study visas allegedly obtained through fraud following an extensive investigation by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), Minister Leon Schreiber announced on Monday.
Speaking during an Inter-Ministerial Committee briefing, Schreiber said investigators analysed over one billion data points and uncovered significant irregularities within parts of the country's immigration system.
The minister said the visa cancellations form part of a broader campaign to continuously identify and remove fraudulent records from government databases, describing immigration enforcement as an ongoing process rather than a once-off intervention.
Despite operating with only 832 immigration inspectors nationwide, Home Affairs has intensified enforcement efforts through cooperation with the Border Management Authority, SAPS and the Department of Employment and Labour.
Schreiber also highlighted the growing role of technology in border security, revealing that South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system has already blocked more than 5,000 visa applications after detecting suspicious passports and identity mismatches. The system currently screens short term visitors from China, India, Mexico and Indonesia using facial recognition and machine learning tools.
He further urged South Africans to replace green barcoded identity documents with Smart IDs, warning that the older ID books remain highly vulnerable to fraud and abuse.

@TNkomo77@Sbudamoore That's pure bullshit, they can't tell citizens what to do, they had more than 30 years to fix that shit and they failed. Jancita we with you my sister, to hell with those grannies in parliament with no plans on how to deal with this situation they themselves created
@ghanaboynie There is no problem, they can stay only if they have valid documentations. If they don't have such they must go back to their own country and that company too must be taken to Ghana.
@chiiamahkah Good, next time never look at profile of the person cause it might contain deceiving information. We have undocumented foreigners who might scam us as usual. Keeping my information safe is vital.
