#5 - Creating an Eerie World: Defilement and Udumbara
A fairly straightforward concept: an insect possesses a villager, causing their body to harden and transform into a chrysalis, vaguely evoking the image of a Konaki-jijii yokai. Its face is marked with curse-inspired symbols. It restrains victims with countless arms, covers their heads, and brands them with a curse.
The Udumbara was inspired by the mythical Udumbara flower and a rough concept sketch I'd drawn earlier. I wanted the silhouette to resemble a crowd of vaguely human-like figures gathered in worship. In Photo Mode, you'll notice countless Udumbara flowers growing in dense clusters, conveying an unsettling feeling.
The forehead merely resembles a face in prayer, while its true face is located on its throat. The eerie/unnatural quality was also achieved through intentionally dropped frames in animation—giving its movements a disjointed appearance.
From a design standpoint, it's one of my personal favorites.
#4 - Hitouban is Rokurokubi
From a gameplay perspective, it's only natural we needed an aerial-based enemy to counter Gaki's ground.
Rokurokubi is not only known for its stretching neck, but in some depictions its head can also fly freely, which became the initial inspiration. For creativity, I first focused on defining the enemy's gameplay role—considering a flying enemy easily defeated by Bows would likely create design problems.
I thought it'd be interesting if its descending attacks interfered with the player's units. This led to its current behavior: it flies, descends, and uses curses to confuse and immobilize units. After that, the rest of the concept fell into shape naturally. Its flying has a swimming-like motion, and it transforms into a face when it descends to cast its curse.
#2 - Making the Seethe Slightly Scarier Than Yokai
The initial concepts evolved from early sins to local folklore and legends of mountain communities.
Core concepts:
Spiritual withering (via sin/corruption)
Emaciated appearance (symbolizing thirst/deprivation)
Retaining traces of humanity
Beauty/ugliness (in color schemes/shapes)
Possessing ears and mouths, but no eyes
Manifestations born from human wrongdoing
Individual Seethes are a mix of original creations and expansions on traditional folklore. Their names were chosen to resemble familiar yokai names.

#1 - The Seethe and Defilement
Inspired by heavenly sins, the defilement parasitically clings to human-made objects and hinders daily life. A shadow is cast wherever humans leave their mark and serves as a guide for the Seethe. Hands are a major design motif to convey themes of taking and stealing. At night, they extend their claws and advance, with their hand movements serving as signals to support their kin.
Instead of graphic horror, I aimed for creepiness and the uncanny. Fingers and hands are depicted precisely, while the rest remains abstract. Thanks to the animators and environment artists, the backgrounds feel alive, creating the atmosphere of a suspicious and eerie nighttime festival.
@Bucky_cm I feel you all filled a void that's been in this genre for a while now. I am personally loving every moment of it. Been here since the first console drop and I've been amazed at the progress up to 1.0. Well deserved success.
