I think Carrick has made a case for a permanent role.

Michael Carrick stepped in as Manchester United interim manager mid-January 2026 after Ruben Amorim left.

Seven matches in, all in the Premier League. He has 6 wins and one draw. He has won Sixteen points and he's on a 2.67 points per game ratio currently. That is league-leading form in the window.

Let me put that in perspective. Since Carrick took over, only Liverpool are close to that points-per-game ratio in the same period.

Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Aston Villa are all below him. That is some elite result there. You have to be honest.

In his 7 matches, he has achieved a 2-0 derby demolition of City, a 3-2 win at Arsenal, being the first coach to take points off them at the Emirates in months.

He also won 3-2 against Fulham, 2-0 at Spurs, 1-1 against West Ham, 1-0 against an almost flawless Everton and a win against Crystal Palace to complete the double over the FA cup holders. At this point, it is important that you know that he had no January signings to improve on the squad the last manager left.

He has worked with what he had and unlocked Benjamin Šeško, who struggled under Amorim with two goals in 1,404 minutes. Now, he has 7 goals in way fewer minutes. . That is in-house asset development. That is management.

Now I think it's time to discuss whether he has earned the right to ask for a permanent role. I think he has.

Granted, people say he was called to be a fire fighter and his role is admittedly different from that of a builder but we'd be dishonest if we say that there haven't been occasions where things became overwhelming for firefighters in the past and they carried out of fires before. Carrick is doing soke serious firefighting and building right now.

The dressing room is fully behind him. Bruno, Maguire, Shaw, all reportedly pushing for Carrick permanent. I know the board is watching. According to reports, a top four finish or a Champions League spot is the trigger for a permanent deal.

Seven matches in now, with six wins in the league. The numbers scream yes. He can secure Champions League football, and it is currently his to lose.

Does he deserve the role? On current evidence, absolutely. He has earned the right to build on it. Should he get it if there are more experienced managers available in the summer? I don't know. I am not INEOS.
