Patrice Lumumba wrote his wife a letter before his execution, and it predicted the Africa rising today
Before they killed him, Patrice Lumumba wrote to his wife. He was in detention, beaten, humiliated, and he knew what was coming. Congo's first democratically elected Prime Minister had less than a month to live. And in that cell, facing his own murder, he did not write in despair. He wrote a prophecy.

He told Pauline not to weep for him. He said he was not mourning his own suffering, because he knew Congo would one day be free. And then he wrote the words that still ring across the continent today. That history would one day have its say. That it would not be the history taught in the United Nations, Washington, Paris or Brussels. In his own words, "Africa will write its own history, and it will be… a history of glory and dignity."

Understand who silenced him and why. Lumumba wanted a Congo that controlled its own vast wealth, its copper, its cobalt, its diamonds, for its own people. That was intolerable to Belgium, the colonial power that had just looted the country for eighty years, and to a Washington that feared an independent Africa. He was captured, tortured, shot by a firing squad in January 1961, and his body was dissolved in acid so no grave could ever become a shrine. Decades later Belgium officially admitted its moral responsibility, and in 2022 finally returned the only piece of him that remained, a single gold-capped tooth.

They destroyed the body so completely because they wanted him erased. Instead he became immortal. His face is on walls from Kinshasa to Dakar. His words are quoted by the very Sahelian leaders now tearing up the old colonial arrangements he died opposing.

He wrote that Africa would write its own history. Look at the continent now, reclaiming its minerals, expelling foreign troops, refusing to bow. The man they dissolved in acid is watching his sentence come true.

Patrice Lumumba became Prime Minister of the Congo in 1960 — the first democratically elected leader of a nation sitting on one of the most mineral-rich territories on earth. Uranium. Cobalt. Diamonds. Gold. He had 72 days in office before the West decided he was too dangerous to govern his own country.

They used the same term on him as they are using on Ibrahim Traore, calling him dangerous.

Malcolm X saw it clearly. He called Lumumba the greatest Black man to walk the African continent — not because he was perfect, but because he was unbuyable. In a world where colonial powers routinely installed compliant African leaders, Lumumba refused to perform submission.

The CIA and Belgian intelligence coordinated his removal, torture, and execution. His body was dissolved in acid. The man who replaced him, Mobutu Sese Seko, looted the Congo for 32 years — with Western applause and backing .

Two Black men from opposite sides of the Atlantic, both assassinated within four years of each other, both threats to the same system.

That is not coincidence. That is policy.

What does it tell you that the men who truly loved Africa were eliminated — while those who sold it were celebrated?
