How to become a trader in 6 months (No BS Guide):
For anybody struggling with their trading OR in the beginning stages of their journey...
I wrote out a small 6 month, step-by-step guide to help you get on track.
Here it is:
Month 1 - Learn the foundations of trading & explore the markets (Don’t over look this):
1) You must understand the basics of the markets:
• Different order types
• Trading terminology
• How brokerages work
• The different markets
• Different trading styles
2) Explore the markets & follow what intrigues you. (Stocks, commodities, forex, crypto etc)
3) Open a demo account & play around a little!
Investopedia & baby pips are great resources to get you started.
Month 2/3 - Fundamentals & Technical Analysis:
1) Study the basics of fundamentals & the market forces that drive price.
2) Explore & study the basics of TA from candle sticks, to chart patters, to supply & demand, to indicators etc.
Again, babypips & investopedia are great tools. I also recommend using forex factory & of course YouTube.
Month 4 - Risk management & psychology:
1) This is not the most fun but it must be done. You need to understand the basics of risk management & the different approaches that can be taken.
2) You need to begin to prepare yourself for some of the psychological hurdles you will face as you take on the markets.
Here are some resources I suggest:
• Investopedia have some good articles on risk management.
• Andrea Unger’s book “The Successful Trader’s Guide to Money Management” was a game changer for me.
• Another fantastic book for beginning to understand trading psychology is “Trading In The Zone” by Mark Douglas.
Side note: Continue to play around on demo accounts & get a feel for what it is like.
Month 5/6 - Building your trading plan & strategy:
You should now have a basic understanding of financial markets, different trading styles, fundamental & technical analysis, risk management and trading psychology!
Now it is time to begin building your personal plan:
• What market/markets will you trade?
• What trading style? Swing, day trading, scalping?
• What strategy will you use?
• What risk management protocols will you use?
• What will your daily trading routine look like?
These are all questions you MUST answer.
Your trading plan & strategy will not be perfect straight off the bat & that is normal. The important thing is that you stay consistent & stick to your plan. It will evolve over time.
In addition, when it comes to your strategy, backtesting is key! You will want at least 100 data points as supporting evidence that your strategy has some profitability.
Time to enter the live markets:
Now it’s time to enter the live market, start small. This phase will be the biggest learning process of all!
What is most important is that you ALWAYS follow your trading plan & strategy. You will undoubtedly change things & evolve has you gain experience in the markets, but always follow the current plan to the letter.
Quick reality check before I go, this guide will not make you an instant millionaire trader. No guide will. This is just a rough outline to follow, really all that matters is that YOU put in the WORK.
With that being said, if you follow this guide, treat trading like a business, adopt a long term mindset, and put in the work, then you will be one step closer to becoming a profitable trader🤝
I hope you find value in this guide 👊
