Not enough kindness in this virtual place any more. I have used it mainly to advocate for human rights around the world, esp. in Iran. But the platform is no longer fit for purpose, aggression has risen, and the scales have tipped in the costs-benefits analysis. So long folks!
@sallymub Not all Classicists, I sincerely hope! Can you give some refs to show where this is happening? I haven't seen anything (except some tweets re Arch of Titus, n.b. not tweeted by Classicists), but maybe I'm out of the loop.
@MalakaShwaikh I am so sorry Malaka - I have been thinking of you and your family all week, hoping they would remain safe. I can't begin to imagine what you and they are going through.
“Ordering a million people in Gaza to evacuate, when there’s no safe place to go, is not an effective warning... World leaders should speak up now before it is too late.”
- @cliveabaldwin, senior legal adviser
"We are extremely worried by Israeli military orders to evacuate 1 million people out of northern #Gaza in 24 hours which will have enormous consequences for children. We call for this to be urgently rescinded and an immediate pause for humanitarian access" - Inger Ashing, CEO.
My friend Daniel Levy used to be an advisor to the Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak. In an interview with the BBC, he calls out the media’s parroting of official claims and credulity in accepting the rationalisations for collective punishment.
This is a significant part of the #AcademicWorkload problem.
Academic lives are no longer the ones senior managers experienced, and the pace/complexity of modern academic labour demands us to be in perfect form every hour of every day.
Truly staggering profits being made by private providers out of the Tories punishing asylum system.
No wonder government are determined to keep folk trapped without status & workrights - no profit for their donors in efficient systems or paid advisory roles for MPs…
Thankful today for Claudia Goldin @PikaGoldin, and hoping that her Nobel Prize for Economics will prompt employers to take more radical action in future to close the gender pay gap, especially by supporting women who take time out to be primary carers for their children. 🙏
Powerful from Jan Egeland - cutting off food, electricity & fuel from 2.4m people c. half under 15yrs old is unconscionable. UK has rightly condemned Hamas targeting civilians - now it should call out Israeli state for ramping up collective punishment, & increase humanitarian aid
The flare-up of conflict in the Middle East is so tragic. It's very heartbreaking to see innocent civilians lose their lives and loved ones on both sides.
Having lived through war, I can tell that civilians will be urging for an urgent ceasefire, not for more bloodshed.
Let's make every effort to de-escalate and work towards peace rather than inflame the situation from the sidelines.
Today, Narges called her father and joyfully said, "Yesterday was one of the best and most glorious days in prison for all of us. The women's ward was filled with happiness, singing, and the chant 'Woman, Life, Freedom.'

Dear @michelledonelan -
As Science Minister, I think you owe the UK science community an apology for this nasty propaganda which undermines the community you are charged with representing.
RT if you agree...
There is no hurricane of immigrants, as Home Secretary Suella Braverman claims.
There is a hurricane of lies emanating from the Conservative Party conference aimed at scaring voters:
Meat Tax
British culture “diluted”
Labour councils controlling shoppers
Blanket 20mph limits
This is the heartbreaking story of Alphonse, a Cameroonian migrant who'd made his way to Algeria, where he says he was beaten by border guards and sent to hospital - where he woke up and he says they'd cut off his feet.
