Matti Kattainen from Fortum starts by wishing everyone good Finnish independence day, and continues by describing the history of Fortum’s SMR work. Starting from a small vision to a large project portfolio.
A longform thread from Ville Tulkki about the ELSMOR/TANDEM workshops first day. A good lineup of speakers even if I'm partly impartial as an organizer.
We are starting our Joint ELSMOR/TANDEM workshop in Brussels. Both are EURATOM-funded research projects into small modular reactors.
Roger Garbil from European Commission gives welcoming words, emphasizing the role of nuclear energy and European R&D efforts.
Happening now! Joint #ELSMOR#TANDEM workshop dedicated to #smallmodularreactors
On today's agenda:
👉Relevant EU research & Initiatives
👉European SMR pre-partnership
👉Licensing
and much more!
Join us on 6 & 7 December to discuss two EU projects relating to Small Modular Reactors, namely
👉ELSMOR
👉TANDEM

@AtteHarjanne @MIT Meilläkin @FortumNuclear @KonstaVarri MIT:n kanssa puolessa välissä 3-vuotinen yhteistyöhanke, jossa luodaan avoimeen lähdekoodiin perustuva työkalu pienreaktoreiden (SMR) kehittämiseen tähtäävien projektien teknistaloudelliseen mallinnukseen. https://t.co/klO9WgL9RX
@RuusunenJukka@JarnoHa@T1Heikkila@PetteriHaveri@JussiKarki Ensimmäiset laitokset maailmalla on varmasti kalliimpia, mutta jaksaisin kyllä uskoa että esim. BWRX-300 pääsisi tonne hieman päälle 40€/MWhe tavoitetasoonsa muutaman laitoksen jälkeen. Taustaa tuolle esim. täältä: https://t.co/dyTkagAy5N
A great opportunity on a short notice, please consider sharing this forward if you'd know MSc/PhD students or young researchers potentially interested in SMRs
The signups are now open for the ELSMOR organised International Summer School on Small Modular Reactors! The course will take place 5-8.7.2022 in Lake of Lecco, Italy! Find more info and the signup form here: https://t.co/hDVBS5iRG7
Next up, Fortum’s VP Petra Lundström discusses their views. She uses triangle similar to World Energy Council’s energy trilemma.
According to Lundström future business agenda includes engineering services, hydrogen, and potential next generation nuclear energy.

As we're slowly heading towards publishing some early results from various work packages, here are some thoughts from our work mapping out what kind of implications Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) might have on the Institutional-Strength-in-Depth framework

As a basis for our work, it is important to identify how the improved safety systems of LW-SMRs affect the demonstrability of safety and thus the future deployment of SMRs. Read more of the work headed by Sebastian Buchholz of @GRS_en here https://t.co/J3WueA3CoJ
Based on @tractebel 's #SMR webinar, SMRs with heat storage are quite promising. At the same time, I'm not completely sure if this would require an MSR as LWRs could certainly achieve at least some of the same positives, especially in markets with district heating.
