If you know cricket , you can’t describe Sir Garry Sobers in words !!

What made Sobers pretty unique
was that for extended periods of time, he was one of his country’s best batsmen and best bowlers.

Runs were needed? Sobers was expected to get them. Wickets? Sobers was given the ball.

Barring Mankad, Reid and for a brief period, Botham and Imran, I don’t think anyone has handled that level of responsibility.

Certainly NO ONE has handled so much for the period of time that Sobers did.

Without major injury. Without complaint.

With a smile.

He could do everything. At world class levels.

He could bat aggressively.
He could bat defensively.
He could bowl fast.
He could switch to medium pace. He could bowl left arm spin.
He could bowl Chinaman (wrist spin).
He could field close in. He could field deep.

And he could do so at a level that was among the best in the nation and sometimes even the world.

He was not a bowler who sometimes got hundreds. Or a batsman who could bowl brilliantly at times.

There will inevitably be some stat obsessed person who will point to his bowling average, forgetting that it often reflected long spells bowled as a stock bowler to hold back runs. With the likes of Hall, Griffith having faded and the pace era not having started in the late sixties, Sobers did everything for the team.

He also captained it.

And with a smile.
