*CPI(M) Visits Families of Parbhani Martyrs, Gives Help, Supports Struggle against Police Atrocities on Dalits*

A CPI(M) delegation on 30 December 2024 visited the families of the Parbhani martyrs Somnath Suryawanshi (a poor law student from the extremely backward Wadar Denotified Tribe community who was killed in police custody on 15 December) and Vijay Wakode (a senior Dalit Panther leader who died on 16 December of shock and heart attack as a result of the police combing operation and savage atrocities on Dalits). The CPI(M) delegation gave cheques of Rs 3 lakh to the Suryawanshi family (Somnath's mother and two younger brothers) and Rs 1 lakh to the Wakode family (Vijay's two sons). The CPI(M) Maharashtra state committee has issued an appeal for funds to help the families of the Parbhani martyrs.

The tragedy in Parbhani, which falls in the backward Marathwada region, began on 10 December, when after a communal rally which condemned the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, a communal goon desecrated a replica of the Constitution which is next to Dr B R Ambedkar's statue. This naturally led to unrest, which the police dealt with in a savage ham-handed manner. 31 people, including women, were arrested, thrown in lock-up, and beaten black and blue, until Somnath died as a result of "shock after multiple injuries", as his autopsy report stated.

The CPI(M) delegation visited the dharna in Parbhani by Ambedkarite organisations demanding stringent action against the police for their atrocities. The dharna is continuing for the last 15 days, and it was addressed by CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Dr Ashok Dhawale, state secretariat member Vijay Gabhane, state committee member and Parbhani district secretary Uddhav Poul, state committee member Rohidas Jadhav, and DSMM state vice president Babruwahan Potbhare. Potbhare has already collected help of over Rs 1.5 lakh from his town Ambajogai in Beed district and handed it over to the Suryawanshi family. The entire Parbhani district committee of the CPI(M) and Ankush Budhwant of Hingoli district were part of the CPI(M) delegation.

Dr Ashok Dhawale not only castigated the police, but also the BJP-NDA state government, saying that it is no accident that the Parbhani desecration of the replica of the Constitution and the police atrocities on Dalits got a boost with the return as chief minister of Devendra Fadnavis, one of the main villains of Bhima Koregaon. He attacked the RSS-BJP's divisive drive towards Hindutva and the Manusmriti and called for intensifying the sustained struggle against the RSS-BJP and its governments at the centre and in the state.

Soon after the warm welcome accorded by the people to the CPI(M) delegation, Union Minister in the Modi regime and RPI leader Ramdas Athavale visited the dharna. But his speech was repeatedly interrupted and questioned by the women present, and he was practically driven away from there!

কোচবিহার জেলার ছাত্র নেতৃত্বের উপর আক্রমণের ঘটানার তীব্র ধিক্কার ও নিন্দা জানাচ্ছি।
আন্দোলনরত ছাত্র - ছাত্রীদের নিরাপত্তা সুনিশ্চিত করার দাবী জানাচ্ছি।
সমগ্র ছাত্র সমাজকে প্রতিবাদে গর্জে ওঠার জন্য আহ্বান জানাচ্ছি।
