The problem with the new ‘mistaken identity’ rule is that it sets a dangerous precedent.

Breel Embolo dived, so if called on the field it’s a second yellow, but that wasn’t the decision.

Yet an amendment to IFAB wording before the tournament states: “When the referee shows a yellow or red card but has clearly penalised the wrong player of either team for the offence in question; the offence itself cannot be reviewed except in the context of mistaken identity.”

We saw the same with Tim Ream (originally booked for a foul) and Miguel Almiron (eventually booked for diving) in USA vs. Paraguay.

In both instances, the right decision was reached when revisiting the incidents.

Yet it’s massively open for debate as to whether this is actually ‘mistaken identity’, and that’s the issue.

It’s just a mistake by the referees. Both got sold by a dive. They didn’t mix up players. They just made a bad call on a regular foul and wrongly handed out a yellow card.

So really it’s just a rule allowing VAR to intervene on more minor on-field calls, and that’s the part a lot of people will feel uneasy about.

Props to Paraguay, they made life genuinely difficult for France. Brought chaos, and France couldn't handle it. First team to really trouble them defensively: shutting down the half-spaces, doubling up on the wingers out wide, denying central progression, clearing danger quickly, and transitioning sharply both positively/negatively.

They made France look blunt, and never once looked afraid of them. Didn't care about names, reputations, or history. Just got on with the job.

Credit to Gustavo Alfaro and every single Paraguay player. They did themselves proud. Going home with their heads held high. Respect. 🇵🇾

Another Red Card incident which was ignored by both the On-field referees and VAR. Miguel Amiron of Paraguay 🇵🇾 (bottom) saw Red Card but Jude Bellingham of England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 was not even cautioned. FIFA and fraud…They came to cheat Ghana.

The game that once rewarded personality now seems obsessed with policing it.

The irony is that football claims to want authenticity, yet it keeps creating rules that encourage players to become robots. Fans don’t fall in love with robots. They fall in love with characters, rivalries, passion and drama.

This rule may have been created with good intentions, but good intentions don’t automatically make good rules. Right now, it feels like football is trying to put a lid on a boiling pot instead of understanding why it boils in the first place.”

I think Slot actually has 3 separate off-ball issues - leaving a plus 1 at the back is actually not the main issue. His mid-block gets pulled apart thru middle as it’s man-oriented not zone-oriented. And when attackers high press,it’s often not backed up by the 2nd line of press.

Mohamed Salah has just shown a very disappointing side of his character.
He started almost every match during a poor season, rarely performed well, and never seemed to take responsibility. Then the moment he’s benched for bad form, the team goes three games unbeaten — and after we throw away a late win, the only thing he can think of is taking personal digs at people who never said anything negative about him publicly.
Very disappointing. He’s been one of my favourite Liverpool players of all time.

What on earth is happening with refereeing in the Premier League right now? Every weekend it feels like the bar for consistency gets dragged even lower.

Take yesterday alone. Newcastle’s penalty saga was farcical. The first one goes to VAR, there’s "minimal contact", yet the player gets booked for diving and the penalty is waved away, even after a VAR review. Minutes later, there’s even less contact in a similar situation, and this time the penalty is awarded and Dan Burn is sent off. You genuinely could not script it.

Then there’s the Liverpool game. Robertson ducks out of the way, does nothing to interfere with play, yet somehow VAR finds him guilty of “making an obvious action”. The same referee, Chris Kavanagh, once overturned a similar offside decision involving Bernardo Silva after checking the monitor. Same scenario, same official, completely different outcome. How can that possibly make sense?

We are told VAR was meant to bring clarity and eliminate controversy, but all it has done is hand out confusion and chaos. The PGMOL under Howard Webb looks more like a circus act than a governing body. These are professionals with access to every angle, every replay, every rulebook explanation, and yet they still cannot apply the basics evenly.

Fans are losing patience because it’s not just about one call anymore. It’s about trust, fairness, and the feeling that the biggest league in the world is being officiated like a Sunday park game. It’s embarrassing, and it’s killing the joy of watching football. Something has to change.
