You could tell Ro Khanna was really hoping this was going to be a friendly segment on Squawk Box this morning...it was not.

After Khanna laid out his grand economic plan, which is essentially just taxing billionaires and increasing the size and scope of social programs, CNBC’s Joe Kernen shut down his fantasy in real time.

Khanna listed the areas where he said spending could be cut: defense spending, insurance, drug costs and fossil fuel subsidies.

That's when Kernen shattered his entire world view.

KERNEN: “You didn’t get me on any of these…”

“Obviously we need to spend money on defense. Maybe you don’t like this war. A lot of people don’t. But we need to spend money probably on defense. It’s such a dangerous world.”

“The fossil fuel subsidies, is that really the big thing?”

“The things that you’re talking about expanding are where most of the of the problems are.”

“We need to do things with all the entitlements, and all the welfare, and all the…we’ve got to fix social security, got to fix Medicare, got to fix Medicaid.”

“We’ve got to fix all those things!”

Kernen’s take here is absolutely correct.

The biggest fiscal challenges aren’t necessarily found in the relatively small areas Khanna wants to cut, but in the enormous entitlement programs that would become even larger under his proposals.
