Today - December 4 - is Navy Day.
Navy Day evoked memories of my wonderful career in the Indian Navy.
Here is a picture of INS Nilgiri (F 33) - upgraded version of Leander Class Frigate - the first warship to be built in India.
I had the good fortune of serving on INS Nilgiri in 1979/1980

On this day in 1972, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi commissioned INS Nilgiri into the Indian Navy, marking a major milestone in India’s naval history. It was the first major warship built in the country, from the keel up, at Mazagon Dock in Mumbai, in collaboration with Yarrow Shipbuilders of Glasgow.

This historic achievement was made possible by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s unwavering commitment to military modernization and technological self-reliance. She laid the keel in 1968, applying kumkum as a symbol of indigenous pride and national ownership. Her direct involvement reflected our deep commitment to building a strong and self-reliant Indian Navy.

Nilgiri's construction established frameworks such as the Warship Overseeing Team (WOT), a successful Navy-MDL partnership model for future projects. This initiative paved the way for advanced naval programs, including the modern Nilgiri-class stealth frigates (P-17A) and India’s nuclear submarine project, the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV), initiated in 1974 under the Congress government.
