Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, exemplified unparalleled sacrifices that strengthened the foundations of Sikhism. He compiled the Adi Granth (later Guru Granth Sahib), giving the Sikh community its eternal scripture, and completed the construction of the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar as a universal place of worship open to all. His growing influence and popularity aroused the jealousy of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, who, suspecting the Guru of supporting his rebel son Khusrau, ordered his arrest in 1606. Refusing to renounce his faith or convert to Islam, Guru Arjan Dev Ji endured five days of brutal torture in Lahore—he was made to sit on a red-hot iron plate, had burning sand poured over his body, was dipped in boiling water, and denied food, water, and sleep—yet he remained steadfast in meditation and acceptance of the Divine Will. On May 30, 1606, his blistered body was taken to the Ravi River, where he attained martyrdom. His supreme sacrifice as the first martyred Guru transformed Sikhism, inspiring resilience, equality, and fearless devotion in the face of tyranny.

This martyrdom marked a pivotal shift, leading to the militarization of the Sikh community under his son, Guru Hargobind Ji, to defend faith and justice.
