President Trump unveiled a phased tariff deal on generic drugs this week, and the structure is built to do one thing: move pharmaceutical manufacturing back to American soil on a deadline.

Generic drugs face 𝟎% 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐬 for the next two years, effective August 1. After that, the rate jumps to 𝟏𝟎𝟎% 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫, then locks in at 𝟐𝟎𝟎% 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲. The message to drugmakers is simple — relocate production stateside now, or pay for staying overseas later.

Seventeen of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, representing 𝟖𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐠 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭, have already agreed to sell their drugs to American patients at the lowest prices anywhere in the world. Roughly half of every generic pill sold in the U.S. currently comes out of India, and this deal is designed to change that math for good.
