The “Baltic Way” — 37 years ago, people in the Baltic states took to the streets to demand independence

On August 23, 1989, around 2 million people in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia joined hands to form a human chain about 600 km long, connecting Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn.

The demonstration marked the 50th anniversary of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, whose secret protocols divided spheres of influence between the USSR and Nazi Germany in Eastern Europe.

The participants demanded the restoration of their countries’ independence. Just two years later, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia had finally left the Soviet Union.
