Bank of America CEO Discusses Economic Slowdown and Fed Cutting Interest Rates
Bank of America's CEO, Brian Moynihan, anticipates a slowdown in the U.S. economy around the middle of the upcoming year. During an interview with Fox Business, Moynihan also mentioned that based on Bank of America's research, the Federal Reserve is expected to begin reducing interest rates from the middle to the latter part of the following year.
Moynihan outlined the economic outlook, forecasting a slowdown to approximately 0.5% annualized growth in the second and third quarters of 2024, followed by a recovery. He further stated that the Federal Reserve is likely to initiate rate cuts during the middle to latter half of the upcoming year, characterizing this as a "soft landing." However, he cautioned about potential geopolitical risks if the Fed tightens monetary policy excessively.
Moynihan discussed how interest rate hikes have influenced consumer and business decision-making. The Federal Reserve has raised its key interest rate 11 times since March of the previous year, reaching the highest level in over two decades. Additionally, he highlighted the persisting concern of inflation, as evidenced by the Labor Department's recent report indicating a 0.4% increase in the consumer price index for everyday goods, including essential items like gasoline, groceries, and rents, in September.
Moynihan emphasized that "higher interest rates affect the most rate-sensitive activities," such as the housing market and car purchases, leading to adjustments in these sectors. This echoes concerns raised by Tesla CEO Elon Musk regarding the impact of high interest rates on car sales.
