Just collected urine from four pigs within 15 minutes. We have developed a technique to make the pigs urinate spontaneously almost on command. Very convienient for our studies on urinary tract infection 😀 The technique was published last year:

In this new publication we show that a commercially available boric acid tube was unable to stabilize microorganims in urine specimens. We recommend that clinical laboratories make there own evaluations before introducing new products. #UTI#EAU

The study raises questions about the timing of intracellular colonization during UTI in larger mammals. We have planned a series of experiments next year to dig deeper - specifically to investigate if intracellular bacteria may actually seed recurrent infections in the pig.
In this new publication we investigate the intracellular pathogenesis of Uropathogenic Eschericia coli in our pig model of cystitis. To our surprise, no viable UPEC were detectable following a 3-day oral treatment with a beta-lactam. (1)

Furthermore, using a gfp expressing UPEC (UTI89), we observed only rod-shaped bacteria and no intracellular bacterial communities (IBCs) at 12 h post infection. At this timepoint, these hallmarks are typically present in high numbers in mice.

Glad to see our most recent publication using our pig model of UTI. We conclude that only 10-30 individual bacteria of Uropathogenic E. coli is enough for inducing a symptomatic cystitis. No wonder E. coli UTI is so common! #UTI
