"[Trump's] strategy, 'structural deregulation' Jody Freeman calls it, is basically about undermining the agencies, defunding them, putting people in charge that are going to shut them down effectively. Those strategies are going to be consequential."

NEW. Doug Sosnik on Harris v Trump
“I would always say there are three things that the press is going to focus on and none of them matter. One is the VP. Two is the conventions. Three is the debates….But all three of those matter in this election.” https://t.co/oZHew8WBzi
NEW. Carville on Kamala Harris:
“She looks like she’s really grown, and people internally would say, ‘James, she’s different. She’s more confident,’ and she asks good questions and seems well briefed. I’m happy she’s like this. I’m not totally surprised.” https://t.co/ApCHMWmwZ5
On why the Harris-Walz campaign must run counter to the strategy of Harris’s 2020 primary bid
CARVILLE: Parts of the Democratic Party—not Joe Biden, not Democratic primary voters, decidedly not—lost their minds. And everybody thought this was the wave of the future, that identity politics would be essential to any discussion of politics and, of course, it was a giant mistake. [Kamala Harris] bought into that, as did other people. Whoever advised her in 2019, I hope to throw them all out in the Pacific Ocean. And to a guy like me, you could see this coming. So I went backed and looked and, on April 27th, 2021, I did an interview on Fox, and I said, “This stuff is killing us. This is the dumbest thing that you can imagine.” And I’ll give myself credit: I was right. I called “defund the police” the three stupidest words in the history of the English language and, of course, no one’s talking about it now. It’s just everything that they touch turns to garbage, and I think people have caught onto them. And people say, “James, you say some controversial stuff.” I say, “It’s not controversial if 90% of the people agree with you. It’s controversial when 51% agree with you.”

NEW. James Carville’s advice:
“I would have three attacks. You ready? Drum roll, please. One, “past." Two, “yesterday." Three, “stale." Okay?…So just take the obvious: He is yesterday, he wants to go back. I want to push forward. Don’t get distracted…” https://t.co/ApCHMWn4OD

Democratic strategist Doug Sosnik:
"I think this next three-week period is critical, because of how compressed the time is for Harris to be able to come out of this as the nominee and to stand up a campaign and to win the race of defining who she is."

Postscript to my newsletter item on skipping out on the conference in Bonn in order to visit Beethoven’s house: It turns out, alas, that Beethoven’s house is closed to individual visitors on Tuesdays. So I had to pay my respects to the great man from the street outside.
“MAGA, according to an NBC poll, is at a 24 percent approval. Trump’s at 42 percent. I think you have an opportunity there, and you’ve got to take opportunities at every point.”

In light of Putin's planned visit to North Korea, here's Anne Applebaum:
"They share a common interest. And the common interest is undermining America, Europe, the liberal world, the democratic world...And they see this as a conflict, even if we don’t."

"Their common interest is undermining us--America, Europe, the liberal world, the democratic world...And increasingly, they’ve concluded that what benefits them is the rise of illiberal, disruptive and radical parties in the democratic world..."
