Ramanujan had very little formal training in mathematics and mostly studied on his own in southern India, reading whatever books he could find.
He developed mathematical results that other mathematicians had struggled with for centuries. He often said that some formulas simply “came to him” and that he could not fully explain how he had discovered them.
One famous example is his formula for calculating π:
The series converges extremely quickly. Each term gives about 8 additional correct decimal digits of π. Even the first term gives a very accurate value.
What is remarkable is that Ramanujan could not always explain how he found such formulas. He simply said that they came to him.
And the number 26390 is part of the formula. How he arrived at such numbers is still fascinating.
