A doctor’s experience.

The word “negligence” is used a lot, especially when something goes wrong.

But let me speak to the part most people hardly ever talk about.

Consider this scenario.

Friday:
I admitted a child.
Evaluated him.
Started resuscitation immediately.

I explained everything to the father, the diagnosis, the urgency, and the need for surgery.

The mother wasn’t available.
But the father understood the situation.

Saturday morning:
He wasn’t there.
I called multiple times. No response.
I stayed in the ward for over three hours waiting.

Then, I had to leave to cater to other patients, so I escalated it.

By 8 pm., I met him on his way out.
He said he had been around since 3:30pm.

Sunday:
Same pattern.
This time, he picked up.

I told him clearly:
Saturday morning was the best time for operation.

After resuscitation.
Before deterioration.

I needed consent.
I needed investigations.
I needed blood.
He wasn’t there.

By the time he returned Sunday evening, there were multiple obstetric emergencies.

Monday morning:
He arrived early and became upset when the surgery couldn’t happen immediately.

Eventually, things were rearranged.

By the grace of God, the child did well.

But the question that bothered me is this:
