I feel like this is a common ‘smart person’ stance, and if you’re also smart it may make sense to you, since you also trust your ability to appropriately gauge road conditions and adapt as needed.

The problem is for every ‘smart’ person there are like 10 average people and 20 absolute morons who will absolutely NOT reliably make the correct choices.

(Also, even smart people are not operating at max levels of attentiveness 100% of the time and there are some scenarios where you likely CAN’T reliably gauge, especially in new neighborhoods, not being aware of mixed housing or schools nearby higher speed roads etc)

It’s a fucking miracle we’ve developed a system where absolute incompetent idiots can be on the road and mostly not kill others with their giant hurtling death machines. I think it’s really easy to forget how wild a system that is.

@KerryLVaughan Agree! There are a bunch of cognitive biases. Plus I think a lot of people a) enjoy driving fast b) really dislike other people driving faster than them c) genuinely think that driving makes them sufficient of an expert in road safety to be making judgements.
