0/ As an aviation enthusiast, I've been following Indian regional flying closely for years — so when today's Baramati crash happened, I dug into the details a bit. Sharing what I found (with sources cross-checked). Sad day.

1/ Very few regional airports in India have ILS for precise glidepath guidance in low visibility.

A strong, equally safe alternative is GAGAN LPV (satellite-based vertical guidance via India's SBAS). It matches CAT I ILS performance (~200–250 ft decision altitude, continuous descent) with zero ground hardware needed at the airport — capability is in the aircraft.

2/ Today's Baramati crash that killed Ajit Pawar and 5 others involved Learjet 45XR VT-SSK (VSR Aviation, ~2010 build). It was registered in India on June 2, 2021; just before the DGCA mandate requiring GAGAN-compliant avionics for new registrations after July 1, 2021.

Older business jets like this rarely get retrofits, so it almost certainly lacked GAGAN LPV.

3/ Baramati has no ILS or published LPV. The crew likely used non-precision approaches (VOR/DME or basic RNAV) — step-downs to MDA, no vertical guidance, higher minima, and greater pilot workload. Safe when conditions allow, but narrower margins in fog/low vis.

4/ Precision systems (ILS or GAGAN LPV) reduce risks significantly: stabilized descents, less disorientation/CFIT potential, fewer diversions.

5/ India has 100+ small/regional airports with rising traffic (UDAN, charters, VIP). Retrofitting every legacy aircraft isn't feasible, but we should:
- Push stronger incentives/mandates for GAGAN equipage on new imports & charters.
- Fast-track LPV procedures at key fields.

6/ Ground ILS isn't viable everywhere — let's at least equip more aircraft with modern satellite vertical guidance. It could prevent tragedies without huge infra costs.

@GabbbarSingh I'll tell you even worse. My cousin lost her husband to oxygen shortage and the next day she lost her father to covid. She and both of her young kids are positive. And my bhabhi lost her dad and dad in law on the same day. Now she and her 10 days old daughter are down with covid.
