Yes: handwriting still matters.
A new study has confirmed that writing by hand activates far more complex and widespread neural networks in the brain than typing, underscoring its importance for learning and memory.
Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology used a high-density EEG cap with 256 electrodes to record brain activity in university students. They found that the intricate, sensory-rich movements involved in handwriting, especially cursive, trigger highly synchronized brain waves across extensive areas of the parietal and central regions. These coordinated patterns are strongly linked to memory formation, cognitive processing, and encoding new information.
In contrast, typing, which involves repetitive, simpler finger movements, produced significantly less neural connectivity and engagement. The difference was striking: the brain appears much less active during digital writing.
The researchers conclude that the unique motor and sensory experience of holding a pen plays a key role in brain development and learning. As a result, they argue that handwriting instruction should remain a core part of education to support deeper comprehension and cognitive growth in the next generation.

Free seated ticket for Sam Fender tonight if anyone wants it?
No longer able to go and I can send a screenshot of the seetickets QR.
Rather someone use it than I go to waste.

My partner Emma is fundraising for Spinal Injuries Association after relearning how to walk again. Below is her amazing story.
Check out her @JustGiving page and please give any pennies or pounds if you can.

Teaching children how to regulate their emotions is crime prevention.
It’s addiction prevention.
It’s the path to a world where people can disagree, and still respect each other.
Today would have been Gary Speed’s 55th birthday.
Whenever he is mentioned on here, this video with Dan Walker comes into my mind. A deeply impactful few minutes if you’ve never seen it before. ❤️
You mean ‘debt free’ because of the millions Ellis Short wrote off when he left
‘Operationally breaking even’ because we had to sell our best youth prospects for peanuts to keep the lights on
And ‘promoted’ once you had become a minority shareholder with no power at all
I have been lucky enough to benefit from a lot of social mobility but I’ll forever be uncomfortable going around Waitrose looking for ‘preserved lemons’ and ‘ras Al hanout’. Sorry grandad.
ORDER IN THE COURT!!
That’s something Green 4 loved shouting today. We are currently learning about speeches and today all boys took it turns to step up in ‘court’ and argue their case that they had prepared earlier in the week 🧑🏻⚖️
Happy Friday! #semh#edutwitter @ForestMoor
Feeling proud of my KS4 classroom door display for #WorldBookDay2023. Can you find Mr Scott? @Ks2AlecScott 📚🕵🏻👀🔎
Huge credit to one of my pupils for the brilliant idea & helping me to complete this display in his art lesson❤️

The most beautiful morning at Brimham Rocks. So lucky to have this beautiful spot on the doorstep! Everyone had a super time, lovely to see the pupils helping each other 😁 #semh
Today really was awesome. My incredibly talented TA made this amazing display on my door for our new explore topic next term ‘What is it like to be respected?’ ⭐️ AND two of my pupils who don’t usually get on, played and made a Minecraft Lego village TOGETHER!! So proud 🥹
