I’ve given this sport 35 years of my life and I love basketball, everything good in my life is a result of basketball and the life lessons I learned, but the above points wear you down, make you question why.

Two weekends of reffing AAU tournaments and here are my takeaways:
Refs are underpaid.
Parents truly don’t know the game of basketball.
Over the back foul doesn’t exist, stop asking for it.
If you have more coaches, directors and personnel in the bench then actual players,

The referee shortage isn’t because people don’t want to ref, it’s the non educated fans, unqualified coaches and disrespectful players that drive people away from being a referee.
We treat every game like it’s the most important game in the world because to these kids at that

Do we miss calls on purpose, no.
If you can’t play against and through contact now, you will struggle and not see the floor past high school.
Just because you lost the ball going up and throw your arms up doesn’t mean you were fouled.

The players/coaches that showed respect, asked questions and had good interactions with the refs, thank you, it’s very much appreciated.
Referees don’t care who wins the game, we are paid the same, regardless. We are working on our craft. Will we miss a call here and there, yes.

without using their hands. Very rarely is someone trying to beat the offense to the spot with their hands wide.
Very few coaches make in game adjustments.
It’s not an and 1, if the whistle isn’t blown.
Pushing off and extending your arm to push off is a foul every time.

As a coach if your first interaction with the referees is you whining, complaining and yelling, chances are things won’t go your way.
Puzzle piece courts that move can’t be good on the joints of these athletes.
Players don’t know how to play defense

The whole March Madness tournament, teams down late in the game with the arrow and refuse to tie up and get the jump ball, go for the foul instead. Don’t understand that.

3 games in to this AAU tourney and it’s clear no one teaches these kids to not play defense with their hands, tissue boxes should be at every table & most parents don’t know the game of basketball.
