WORLD HEART DAY♥️

Your heart beats around 100,000 times a day.

But how much do you actually know about it?
Here are some facts everyone should know about their heart:
1️⃣ Cardiovascular disease remains the world's leading cause of death, responsible for millions of deaths every year.
2️⃣ And many cardiovascular problems can develop silently for years before the first symptom appears.
3️⃣ High blood pressure may cause no symptoms.
4️⃣ High LDL cholesterol may cause no symptoms.
5️⃣ Diabetes may cause no symptoms.
Yet all three can progressively damage blood vessels and increase cardiovascular risk.

That is why "I feel healthy" does not necessarily mean "my heart is healthy."

6️⃣ Your genes matter too.
Some people inherit conditions such as familial hypercholesterolaemia, which can cause very high LDL cholesterol from a young age.

Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is another inherited cardiovascular risk factor. Current European guidance recommends considering measuring it at least once in every adult's lifetime.

7️⃣ Smoking is one of the most important modifiable cardiovascular risk factors.
It damages blood vessels, promotes atherosclerosis and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Quitting helps at any age.

8️⃣ Exercise matters.
For most adults, current recommendations support:
150-300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week

OR
75-150 minutes of vigorous activity per week
plus muscle-strengthening activity on at least 2 days per week.
You don't have to become an athlete.

9️⃣ Diet matters too.
There is no single superfood that protects the heart.
A heart-healthy dietary pattern emphasizes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, healthy sources of protein and unsaturated fats while limiting excess sodium, added sugars, saturated fat and highly processed foods.

🔟Sleep matters.
For most adults, 7-9 hours is a reasonable target.
Poor sleep and sleep disorders are associated with several cardiovascular risk factors and diseases.

Persistent loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing or excessive daytime sleepiness may warrant evaluation for sleep apnoea.

And remember:
🟨A heart attack is NOT the same as cardiac arrest.
- A heart attack is primarily a circulation problem: blood flow to part of the heart muscle is blocked or severely reduced.
- Cardiac arrest is an electrical/mechanical emergency in which the heart suddenly stops pumping effectively.
- A heart attack can cause cardiac arrest, but they are not the same condition.
