What this tells you is that tanking is mostly fine
But tanking without tipping off league/media gambling partners? That’s a big no no.
If you want to talk about undermining the foundation of NBA competition I’m on your side. Doing it arbitrarily shows that you aren’t serious.
Yeah, Adam Silver needs to be questioned on this during his All-Star availability.
Fining a team for altering a late-game rotation, which resulted in a win, and a win in which the Jazz's roster outscored the opponent, is a slippery slope the NBA should be wary of embarking on.
"...the Jazz removed two of the team's top players...before the beginning of the 4Q and did not return them to the game"
1) Ok so if Will Hardy sits Markkanen the entire 3Q and plays him in the 4Q instead, is that acceptable?
2) They won that Heat game!
3) They won that Heat game because Brice Sensabaugh is nails and came through with several big shots. Is he not permitted to be the focal point of an offense without the presence of 'stars' on the floor concurrently?
I have more questions now than before they addressed/penalized this.
Last March, ahead of the Cooper Flagg draft, the Toronto Raptors routinely benched All-Star Scottie Barnes in clutch situations. They sat regularly starters for DNP-Rest. They were not punished or fined.
Today, Adam Silver dropped the hammer on the Utah Jazz for the same thing.
Yeah @NBA@BobbyMarks42 you are right. Sitting all starters and losing by 40 every night is way more ethical. This Kings team is a true beacon of how tanking should done. What an amazing game we are watching right now.
The Jazz knew about JJJ’s knee previously. They were going to shut him down. Jaren was adamant that he wanted to play once at home before the surgery. They set his restriction at 25 minutes. That’s one reason he didn’t play in the previous fourth quarters, per sources
The NBA has had literally had an illegal gambling operation broken up by the FBI this season that consisted of:
Multiple teams
Multiple players
Staff of teams
Close associates of players
And we have heard more about the Jazz tanking as a risk to the league integrity.
I remember watching the Thunder play this rotation in 2021 on a roster that included SGA, Al Horford, Lu Dort, and Kenrich Williams and thinking, “Thank you OKC for preserving the integrity of the NBA!”
Give me a break 🙄
