I think the scariest thing is loving someone enough that it makes yourself truly known to them. And in all your efforts to compose yourself into the best version, you simply reveal more of who you really are, and everything that's wrong with you.
Married for 62 years. My Grandpa passed away 4 years ago and my Grandma has never been the same. She hasn't lost her edge at all, but I can tell she just wants to be home because it's the closest to him she can be. They were inseparable and treasured each other to the end.
