Day Five of UPC Core Training Completed!

With support from The Colombo Plan, ISSUP Uganda, and UNICEF Uganda, Day Five marked the successful completion of the five-day Universal Prevention Curriculum (UPC) Core Training held at the UYDEL Masooli Rehabilitation Centre in Kasangati, Wakiso District.The training brought together 25 professionals from diverse fields, including religion, law, medicine, social work, psychology, substance-use treatment and prevention.On the final day, participants explored monitoring and evaluation, programme reporting and dissemination, professional ethics, ethical decision-making, application of the UPC Core Course to practice, and professional development planning.The closing ceremony was graced by Dr. David K. Basangwa, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist and former Executive Director of Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital. He congratulated participants and encouraged them to apply their knowledge and skills to strengthen evidence-based substance-use prevention within their professions and communities.

The training strengthened participants’ capacity to plan, implement and evaluate effective, ethical and evidence-based prevention interventions.The day concluded with a post-test, training evaluation and preparations for certification.Congratulations to all 25 participants for their commitment, active participation, cooperation and resilience throughout the five days!

Strengthening Youth Resilience Through Innovation & Sport

UYDEL was honoured to participate in the 2-day Cross-Regional Conference on “Strengthening Youth Resilience to Violence and Crime through Innovation, including through Sport”, held on 26–27 August 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya, and organized by UNODC with support from the Ministry of Justice of China.

Across the two days, UYDEL shared Uganda’s practical experiences in youth crime prevention through three key contributions:

Dr. Rogers Kasirye (Ph.D), Executive Director – presented evidence on youth violence & crime trends, drivers and prevention challenges in Uganda, emphasizing early prevention, diversion, rehabilitation, reintegration and data-driven action.

Agnes Kakwera, Youth Crime Prevention Officer ,explored the link between substance use, crime and violence, highlighting integrated prevention, treatment, psychosocial support, skills development and livelihood opportunities.

Moses Kinobi, Sports Coordinator & Crime Prevention Officer ,shared approaches to gender-responsive and inclusive crime prevention, highlighting sport as a platform for resilience, teamwork, positive identity and belonging.

The conference brought together experts, government representatives, CSOs, researchers, practitioners and youth actors from East Africa, Central Asia and China to exchange innovative approaches to youth-centred, community-based and evidence-informed crime prevention.

UYDEL remains committed to building pathways from risk to resilience, exclusion to opportunity, and vulnerability to positive participation.

Every new university journey comes with choices and the right knowledge can make all the difference.

UYDEL, in partnership with UNODC and with support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, engaged over 200 Year One students at Bugema University Main Campus in a Drug, Alcohol & Crime Prevention Awareness Session during their orientation.Students gained practical knowledge and life skills on drug and alcohol prevention, crime & violence prevention, peer pressure, refusal skills, cybercrime, gambling, mental health and making safe choices.The message was clear: Safe choices today can protect the dreams of tomorrow.

UYDEL and partners remain committed to empowering young people with the knowledge, skills and support needed to build safer, healthier communities.

Empowering students to choose peace, reject drugs, and prevent crime!

Over 50 students at All Saints Secondary School participated in an interactive outreach on drug abuse, crime, violence & child trafficking. Through the Kiwi Bird video, role plays, and discussions, they gained practical life skills to resist negative peer influence and make safer choices.

A Peace Club was also launched, with members becoming Peace Ambassadors to champion drug-free, safe, and peaceful school communities.Together, we're building a generation that chooses hope over harm.

Over 1,000 students and staff at Iganga Girls' SS were reached through a school outreach promoting peace, drug prevention, and positive choices.

Through a mass service, interactive discussions, an addiction awareness video, and role plays, students strengthened their refusal skills, decision-making, and resilience against peer pressure and risky behaviours.A major highlight was the commissioning of the school's Peace Club, with members receiving T-shirts and taking on the role of Peace Ambassadors to champion peaceful coexistence and drug-free school communities.Together, we're empowering young people to build safer, healthier futures.

Today, UYDEL, together with UNICEF, UNHCR, KCCA and NGO partners, launched the Adolescent and Young People's Empowerment Program (AYEP)—a social protection program that will reach 2,000 adolescents on the move, including refugees, through a Cash Plus approach that strengthens protection, resilience and opportunities.

Forgive us where we have fallen short, especially those times when we have sought to rely on our own abilities and not looked up to you.

We place into your hands the souls of those we have lost and pray that you give strength to those who have been injured, those in detention, and those who are missing. Give grace to their families.

🌱 Young people are leading the way in climate action!

Beneficiaries at UYDEL Bwaise Youth Centre participated in a UNICEF–UYDEL My Green Action Campaign training on climate change, waste segregation, tree planting, Fundoo, and U-Report.
They received 20 fruit tree seedlings to plant and monitor in their communities, while another tree was planted at the youth centre.
