On 19 July 1937, Dr. B. R Ambedkar took the oath as a Member of the Bombay Legislative Assembly after being elected in the 1937 provincial elections as a candidate of the Independent Labour Party (ILP). This marked the beginning of one of the most significant legislative chapters in his public life.
Within the Assembly, Dr. Ambedkar emerged as one of its most incisive parliamentarians. Between 1937 and 1942, he consistently advocated for labour welfare, agrarian reform, access to education, fiscal accountability, civil liberties, and the rights of historically oppressed communities. His speeches during budget debates, particularly those delivered in 1938 and 1939, are widely regarded for their constitutional reasoning, economic insight, and evidence-based critique of public policy.
For Dr. Ambedkar, legislative office was not merely a position of authority but a platform to translate the principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity into concrete public policy. His work in the Bombay Legislative Assembly demonstrated how democratic institutions could be used to advance social justice and protect the rights of the most marginalized.
Today, we remember this milestone as a defining moment in India’s democratic and constitutional journey, and as a testament to Dr. Ambedkar’s unwavering commitment to representative governance and transformative legislation.
The mother of democracy chooses this style over conversations and giving the protesters the answers they seek.
Let’s hope the children of democracy do not take notes.

The woman who threw ink at Abhijit Deepke is a supporter of a rapist Kuldeep Sengar,
She had previously staged a protest in support of Kuldeep Sengar, who is serving a sentence for rape.
The ink attack on Abhijit Deepke is condemnable and we stand firmly with him.
