🇯🇵🇺🇸 Japan ran Unit 731’s human death labs on Chinese soil: the US then gave its scientists immunity for the data instead of justice 🇨🇳

A two-part documentary from CNA Insider released on YouTube earlier this month and it does something most Unit 731 coverage doesn’t. It pairs the full record of what happened inside the facility with the post-war American deal that let the men who ran it walk free.

The series is called Inside Unit 731: Japan’s Secret Human Experiments. Part 1 covers the death lab itself at Pingfang, near Harbin. Part 2 covers what happened after Japan surrendered.

The central figure is Hideo Shimizu. He’s in his mid-90s now. He was a 14-year-old recruit when he arrived in early 1945. In this documentary he goes further than he has before, exploring the scale of the complex, the prisoners referred to as “maruta”, the pathogen experiments where infection was effectively a death sentence and the orders to destroy evidence as Soviet forces closed in. He goes back to the Harbin ruins on camera.

Part 1 documents the experiments in detail. Deliberate infection with plague, anthrax and cholera. Open-air tests at Anda, vivisections, field deployments against Chinese civilians, one documented operation in Quzhou in 1940 used plague-infected fleas and killed thousands. There is testimony from Chinese survivors, it also covers the unit’s Singapore branch, which bred fleas specifically for those attacks.

Part 2 is the harder watch. After 1945, the United States offered Shiro Ishii and the core scientists full immunity from war crimes prosecution. In exchange, they handed over the human experiment data. US officials knew exactly how that data was produced, it fed directly into American biological weapons programmes. The men involved largely avoided the Tokyo Trials and returned to senior positions in Japanese medicine and academia.

The only prosecution that actually happened was the Soviet trial at Khabarovsk in 1949. Twelve men were convicted. The documentary also examines evidence that some Allied POWs may have been used in experiments and the families who are still piecing together what happened through diaries and declassified files.

Eighty years on, this is not a closed chapter. Witnesses like Shimizu are still alive to speak. Declassified records keep confirming the terms of the deal. The victims were overwhelmingly Chinese, on Chinese soil. Western accounts have generally treated Unit 731 as a footnote to the Pacific War or a lesser footnote to Nuremberg. This series refuses that framing.

What it shows is the structural logic: after 1945, great power competition rewarded whoever could supply useful data. China carried the dead and the lasting damage. The men whose work produced that data got protection.

If accountability applied consistently, Unit 731 would sit alongside the Nazi medical experiments in every serious historical treatment. It doesn’t. The question is why power still determines whose dead get remembered and whose get forgotten.

Who civilized who?

The dominant narrative tells us that the Spanish brought culture, progress and civilization to America. However, it takes a closer look to understand that indigenous civilizations were not only advanced, but surpassed Europeans in many respects.

What the indigenous people already mastered:

• Hygiene: The Aztecs bathed twice a day when in Europe the standard was once a week. Who needed cleaning lessons?.
Medicine: Aztec herbalist was the most advanced in the world. They had specialized medical schools, with disciplines such as surgery, hematology and internal medicine. They used suppositories, ointments and suction cups, while Europe still resorted to practices like sangria.

• Architecture and engineering: From Teotihuacan to Tenochtitlán, their structures not only withstand the test of time, but are wonders of urban planning and design. Chinampas, a system of cultivation on artificial islands, continue to be a unique example of agricultural sustainability.

• Astronomy and Math: The Mayans calculated the number "zero" and created a calendar more accurate than the European. His astronomical knowledge was not only ahead of time, but it was fundamental to his daily life.

• Art and literature: They created codes on paper elaborated with tree bark long before Europeans brought print. His works in feathers, metals, ceramics and wood amazed the conquerors.
Music and Poetry: Indigenous people celebrated nature, love, and friendship through songs and poems, demonstrating a deep connection to their environment.
Economy and trade: The Aztecs and Incas developed extensive trading systems, reaching as far as Nicaragua, while Europe lacked basic drainage.

The true story reveals that America was not a wild or uncivilized territory. It was a continent full of knowledge, creativity, and unique breakthroughs that Europe still did not know. The conquest destroyed much, but it cannot erase the footprints of greatness indigenous cultures left behind.

Askeri yetenekleriyle erken yaşta ün kazandı. Richard'ın en büyük şöhreti,Selahaddin'in 1187'de Kudüs'ü yeniden ele geçirmesinin ardından başlattığı Üçüncü Haçlı Seferi'nden gelir. Bu sefere Fransa Kralı II. Philip ile birlikte önderlik etti. 1191'de Kıbrıs'ı ele geçirdi. Daha sonra Akka'ya gelerek kentin ele geçirilmesine yardımcı oldu. Elindeki 3000 müslüman esiri şehit etti. Eylül 1191'deki Arsuf Muharebesinde Selahaddin'e karşı büyük bir zafer kazandı. Daha sonra Yafa'da Selahaddine karşı bir zafer daha kazandı. A self-taught Irish schoolteacher wrote a book in 1854 that almost nobody read for 80 years, until a 21-year-old MIT student picked it up and realized it could be used to design every computer in human history.

His name was George Boole. The book is called An Investigation of the Laws of Thought.

Boole was born in 1815 in Lincoln, England. His family was poor. He left school at 16 to support them. He taught himself Latin, Greek, French, German, and Italian.

Then he taught himself mathematics. By 19 he had opened his own school. By 24 he was publishing original papers in the Cambridge Mathematical Journal, competing with men who had spent decades inside the best universities in Britain.

He never had a degree. He never had a mentor. In 1849, Queen's College in Cork hired him as a professor anyway.

In 1854, he published his masterwork. What he built inside it was something nobody had attempted before at this scale. He turned logic into algebra.

Before Boole, logic was philosophy. You argued in sentences. You reasoned in paragraphs. It was powerful and completely impossible to automate, because there was no formal system underneath it, just language.

Boole stripped it down to arithmetic. He showed that every act of human reasoning could be reduced to operations on two values. True or false. One or zero. AND, OR, NOT. If both conditions are true, the result is true. If neither is, the result is false. Every judgment a human mind makes, every decision, every deduction, could be written as an equation following those rules.

Logicians read it. They found it interesting. Engineers building machines had never heard of it.

For 83 years, the book sat there.

Then in 1937, a 21-year-old MIT master's student named Claude Shannon was working on a thesis about electrical relay circuits. Switches that could be open or closed. Current that either flowed or didn't.

He read Boole and understood something nobody had connected before.

An open switch is a zero. A closed switch is a one. A circuit with two switches in series only carries current when both are closed. That is AND. A circuit with two switches in parallel carries current when either is closed. That is OR. Shannon proved that every possible logical relationship Boole had described could be physically built using wire and switches.

That single insight is the foundation of every computer ever made.

After Shannon, chip designers stopped thinking about electricity and started thinking about logic. Every transistor on every processor running right now is implementing a Boolean operation. Every if-statement in every codebase is Boolean logic. Every database query using AND or OR. Every neural network threshold that fires or doesn't fire. All of it is running the algebra of a self-taught schoolteacher from Lincoln who died 160 years ago.

The strangest part is what happened to Boole at the end.

He was walking to class in November 1864 when he got caught in a rainstorm. He lectured for hours in wet clothes. He went home sick. His wife, Mary, believed in homeopathic medicine and thought the cure should mirror the cause. She wrapped him in wet sheets and poured cold water over him repeatedly.

He died a few days later. He was 49.

He never saw a transistor. He never saw a circuit. He never saw a single physical machine run a single one of his rules.

His book is in the public domain. Free to download. Most engineers use the word Boolean dozens of times a week. Almost none of them know who they are saying.
