For the first point, estimation is typically used in conjunction with other checks, not on its own.
And second, there is a lawsuit, but no outcome. Any company processing PII is subject to the laws of the origin of PII, so in my case GDPR, so there definitely would be consequences if data was found to be mishandled.
I’m not shirking the fact that misuse isn’t impossible, but like I said in the original post, the benefits of a better moderated event is worth it for me
And this isn’t new, if you set up an online bank (cash app, Revolut, etc), airline travel, and a bunch of other stuff you upload ID to, it is very likely at some stage your data is being processed by some trusted third party (such as persona)
Furality is requiring VRC’s 18+ age verification for attendees going forward. I’ve seen some strong reactions and wanted to share my perspective as an attendee.
I understand why people are uneasy about a third party handling ID, but I think this is the best solution available and worth the theoretical downsides. This kind of verification already happens behind the scenes with banks, payment apps, phone carriers, and social platforms.
In my view, the furry space online isn’t really SFW in general, regardless of how any one person uses it—search “furry” on Twitter and the top results make that clear. Even though the event itself isn’t adult-focused, clear age gating removes uncertainty about what’s appropriate and what people can comfortably share. I think this is a positive step and will improve things in the long run.
@rantingjax @DuheyTheFennec I think it is naive to expect an event of this scale not to cost anything. Cloud infrastructure costs alone are significant
@AshSerigala Yep, their platform, their rules. If you don’t like it, don’t go. That is the short answer!
But definitely interested in discussing the topic, for a game which relies so heavily on user engagement and content, user sentiment it really important
@GobboGirlX Yes, but in the context of identifying you online, you need a combination of ID and some biometric typically (imagine irl if a security looked at either your face or your id but not both, it wouldn't make sense)
Agree there is always a non-zero chance of data misuse, future policy changes etc. My point is that the potential downsides are worth the benefits in this case. Blanket verification is the only scalable way to moderate events of this scale effectively, reactive moderation does not work with events of this size, especially online events.
Not saying everything in the fandom should be age gated, let SFW spaces stay accessible. But Furality and VRChat on a whole is not SFW imo. I think this decision is tied to vrc in general moving towards gating suggestive/explicit content behind the verification, and furality is by far the largest event every year, so it makes sense for vrc to extend these rules to the event. It hasn't been stated anywhere to my knowledge, but I would bet vrc likely pushed for Furality to implement this rule (just speculation though)
