29 January 1761 was the day Ahmed Shah Abdali entered Delhi after the battle of Panipat two weeks earlier. The queen Zinat Mahal and her som Jawan Bakht received him.... almost immediately he met the Maratha agent Hingane and sent out messages to the Peshwa to arrange a treaty. He also had to face an unhappy Shuja who soon left for his capital Faizabad. He sent letters to the Jat king and the Rajputs to pay him a tribute. However none did. Contemplating a campaign to force them to do so, his soldiers refused...and by March 1761, he had to leave Delhi and return to his country never to step into the city again...

Marathas returned to the north and became masters of Delhi in 1770 in the reign of Madhav rao Peshwa.

The picture below shows the wooden arch made out of the wood of the tree under which Sadashiv rao Bhau stood in the battle of Panipat. It was a mango tree and became black with blood, earning the epithet 'Kala Amb', today the place where a memorial for the battle stands.

This arch is located at the Panipat museum.
